The insets show peristimulus time histograms (PSTHs) corresponding to the spike trains in Figure 2 (best viewed on a computer screen). PSTHs were estimated from 50 trials for real cells, 1000 trials for model cells, and smoothed using a Gaussian kernel. The kernel width was chosen automatically (see text) except for the zoomed-in excerpt of the PSTH in B, where for better visibility we used a slightly wider kernel (FWHM: 0.15 ms). The variance explained (R2) by the generalized linear model, quadratic model and STM was 0.15, 0.26, and 0.47 (A), and 0.19, 0.41, and 0.5 (B), respectively.
