The trend lines show the MDS1 as smooth spline functions of depth or macrofaunal biomass. The depth values in Fig. 9a were converted to simulated macrofaunal biomass using an empirical equation from the northern GoM, Log10 biomass (mg C m−2) = 2.21–0.28 * depth (km) (R2 = 0.72, P<0.001) and then plotted against the MDS1 (Fig. 9b, gray squares). The two largest empirical biomass values (640 and 439 mg C m−2 at MT1) were not shown (Fig. 7b, blue squares) but had been included in the estimation of spline function. Their corresponded MDS1 values were 0.55 and 0.21, respectively.
