Left panel: when bacterial population size and extracellular DSF concentration are low, RpfC autokinase activity is inhibited by its juxtamembrane domain (OFF state). Right panel: when bacterial population and extracellular DSF concentration are high, DSF binds to the RpfC sensor and releases the inhibition of the juxtamembrane domain on autokinase activity, resulting in RpfC autophosphorylation (ON state).
