The doubling times of a diversified population and a homogenous population are compared for different adaptation times and switching times . Single cell diversification is implemented according to model 2, see Fig. 4. Here the ratios (left column) and (right column) are shown. If this ratio is larger than 1 (shown in blue), the heterogeneous population grows faster. Data shown are for diversification probabilities (A and B), (C and D), and (E and F). In all cases the birth mass noise is 8% and data are only shown for as in Fig. 3.
