In the disorganised matrix that was observed in CSCD areas where collagen fibrils formed necklace-like arrays were present (yellow arrows and highlighted area in A). Proteoglycan chains linked the fibrils together (B). In the electron micrograph, yellow arrows indicate collagen fibrils whereas black ones indicate proteoglycans in the corneal stroma.
